If you work in local government and support legislative bodies, boards, or committees, you’re already living in Robert’s Rules every day.
May 2 marks the birthday of Henry Martyn Robert, author of Robert’s Rules of Order. It’s a simple way to recognize the role parliamentary procedure plays in keeping meetings fair, structured, and moving forward.
Most of the time, you’re working from experience, not the book. But it’s still helpful to have both versions handy:
- Full rules (official reference with the most up-to-date versions):
https://robertsrules.com/ - Simplified guide (easier for day-to-day use and onboarding):
https://assembly.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/roberts_rules_simplified.pdf
The full version is there when you need it. The simplified version often helps newer members participate and keeps meetings from getting overly procedural. It can also be a helpful reference for the public.
If you’ve ever had a board member hesitate because they weren’t sure how to “do it right,” the simplified guide can make a noticeable difference.
Nothing to change if your meetings are running well. But it’s a useful resource to keep in your back pocket.
